Earlier in the year there was some discussion around the internet about Carp’s decreased velocity (to include a piece here). At the time I never investigated the relationship between velocity and effectiveness. Here’s a chart that attempts to get at that aspect for Carp.
According to rv100 there does appear to be a trend that more velocity equals better results for Carp (data from both 2009 and 2010).
Think it’s also worth noting that Carpenter’s fastball velocity was actually an outlier in 2009; he had never before averaged higher than 91.9 MPH w/ that pitch according to fangraphs.

Steve, didn’t THT do a piece in recent years about how fastball velocity and effectiveness go hand in hand? I’ll look around for the link, but I’m pretty sure I read something about it. Perhaps it was Harry Pavlidis?
By the way, I’m a Cubs fan and Carpenter has been one of my favorite players since about 2004. I love watching the guy pitch.

Yep, I believe it was Mike Fast on THT live, or at least he updated past work done on the subject. Clearly it was at an aggregate level.
